How to build a life together; Chapter 8

Chapter 8; Jesse P.O.V

“Tell me about Harper,” I say to Alex as we continue with our lunch.

“Well, she definitely has your eyes.” She says flirting with me.

“You always did like my eyes.”

“I still do. I hope you stay long enough to meet her.”

“I am not leaving either of you ever again. I am working on a transfer back here and after that, we will get back together and take it from there.”

“You still want to be with me even after all this time.”

“Of course I do. That was the promise. After two years I come back and ask you out.

“Okay.”

“Can I see a picture of her?” I asked even though I had managed to get a few pictures of Harper.

“Sure.” She says as she reaches out for the purse.

“This is her when she was just a day old and the other is when she was a year old.” She says pointing at two pictures one with her in it.

“She is so beautiful. She clearly got that from me the hair though, is definitely from your side.”

“We both have blonde hair so there’s still a chance that that is from you and the good looks are from me.” She says.

“No way!! The good looks may be a 50-50 share but that messy hair is 100% yours.” I say and she laughs. I always made fun of her hair being messy, especially in the mornings. She takes a look at her watch and I know she has to leave.

“I need to get going. I have a bunch of errands that I need to do before Harper comes home.” She says as she signals the waiter for the cheque.

“Can I join you?” I ask hopefully and take away the cheque that the waiter had given her.

“I am going to do some grocery shopping and you hate that so…”

“I can handle it if it means spending more time with you,” I say.

“Your choice but don’t complain when you get bored.” She says getting up from her seat.
Holding my hand out towards her to grab onto I say, “I won’t.”

We headed out of the restaurant and proceeded toward the grocery shop. It was the same grocery shop that she took me to when she made me dinner the night after she came to see me play for the first time.

“You should let me drive you home since you don’t have a car and you have a torn of bags to carry.”

“I can’t ask that of you. You probably have things that you need to get done yourself.”

“I don’t. Please just let me drive you home. I still worry about you.” I say as I grab her hand and interlock our fingers together.

“Okay.” She says much to my delight.

I drive her home in silence. My mind was wondering whether I would get to see Harper today. I was quite nervous but I had this desire to get to see her as soon as I could once I knew about her existence. I worried whether Alex is dating anyone and if that person would interfere with my plans. I worried whether things between me and Alex would be. Would it be the same, worse or better? I worried all the way until Alex brought my mind away from my thoughts when she told me I had passed her house. I got us back and helped her unload the groceries from the car to the kitchen.

“You wanna help me unpack and cook?” She asked as I placed the last bag of groceries onto the kitchen counter.

“I don’t want to impose any further,” I say.

“You won’t.” She says.

“Okay. So…. When did you know you were pregnant?”
