Dog House (The photographer oneshot sequel)

Dog House

Ellen  p.o.v
I walk into our house like I usually do after a long day at work only this time I am accompanied by two fluffy friends. I saw them at the entrance of a convenient store and could not leave them. They looked scared so I went into the store and bought them a few items thinking that Portia wouldn’t mind it since we already had one dog but she had other plans on her mind.

“Hey baby.” I said to Portia who is seated with the kids.

“Mama!!” Emily and Aria run towards me crushing my legs once they get there. Julies is still seated hugging me has lost it coolness ever since she begun her teenage phrase.

“Hey babies. Guess what I got you two?” I asked them as I put them down and show them the box that I was holding.

“A puppy?” They both said in unison as they have been asking for a dog for a while now.

“I got two puppies one for Emily and one for Aria.” I said as I handed both their puppies. “Now they aren’t clean so you have to help me wash them then tomorrow we can take them to the vet to make sure they are healthy.”

“We will help you mama.” Aria said.

“Can we show mommy?” Emily asked

“Sure.” I said and walked up to the kitchen to put away the dog food. I open the fridge and looked around for something to eat or drink but the door shut closed just as I decided on what to eat.

“Hey baby.” I said once again as I went to kiss her but she turned her head away.

“What were you thinking?” She asked and I immediately knew I was in trouble for something I did.

“About what?” I asked.

“About what? Are you being serious right now? We talked about getting only one dog and getting it together not you going out on your own and getting two dogs.”

“I saw them at the store and I just couldn’t leave them.” I said as I took out a beer from the fridge already knowing this won’t be an easy conversation.

“You didn’t even ask me if it was okay. You gave them to the girls and made them think it was final.”

“I just thought that you wouldn’t mind since we already have a dog so it wouldn’t be like we have no idea of what we are doing.”

“Did you get what I asked for from the store?”

Dem it!!!
I took a large mouthful of my drink trying to buy time to think of something that wouldn’t make her even more upset with me.
Here goes nothing.

“I uhh forgot but I’ll go back and get them.”

“Don’t bother.” She said and started walking out. I sigh loudly this wasn’t how I planned on spending my weekend off.

As I take a seat on the kitchen counter she come back and says, “You should also forget to sleep in bed tonight.”
Yep, definitely not the right words.

I finished my drink then went back to the sitting room thinking at least three people still liked me. When I got there things changed, not only were the twins gone but Julies was also now mad at me for something I apparently between the unspoken words between us.

“Thanks to you mom said I couldn’t hang out with Kyle tonight which FYI I have been looking forward to.” Julies said to me as I sat down.

“You can if you wanted too.” I said.

“Are you crazy? She would punish me more for being mad at you.”

“How about you call Kyle and you can hang out here instead. I’ll talk to your mom.”

“I think you should just make up to Mom for missing dinner then we can both stop worrying about doing anything.”

“What dinner?”

“Last Friday’s dinner. The one we all sit and have a meal then mom shows us the pictures she has been taking over the month and we compile them into an album.” Julies says.

“No. I thought dinner was tonight that's why am early.”

“It was definitely last week momma.”

“Why didn’t you remind me?” I said knowing that I definitely screwed up.

“You are the adult momma,” Julies said laughing at me. “I can however help you make dinner and you think of something sweet. I definitely want to Kyle tomorrow.”

“Since when did you grow up and give good relationship advice,” I said while texting Portia an immediate apology.

We head to the kitchen and start working on dinner. Julies, like Portia knows how to cook and when I mean cook I mean chef-worthy meals kind of cooking. Portia likes cooking my favourite meals while Julies like experimenting with various recipes so it’s an equal balance between the two. Portia ended up taking longer than I expected so I told Julies to go sleep while I waited for Portia. I waited a few hours before I heard Portia’s car. I went to see her in as I knew the twins were probably asleep and she need help carrying them upstairs. She didn’t say a word to me even though I was trying to make a conversation.

“I am sorry about missing dinner. I honestly thought it was tonight. Julies and I cooked dinner in case you want something to eat something.”  I said once again.

“I don’t want anything. I am going to sleep now.” She said already in bed and looking away from me.

“Can I come into bed?” I asked while standing at the door.

“Do whatever you want. You always do.” She said and switch off the light.

Clearly, that meant a big no so I said my goodnight to her and closed the door on my way out when it was clear she wasn’t going to speak any further. I went downstairs and cleared up the kitchen before heading to the extra bedroom and turning in for the night.

Sometime in the middle of the night, I felt someone nudging me awake. At first, I thought it was the twins since they are the ones who wake me up at night every once in a while but I felt the hand was a bit bigger so I thought it was either Julies or Portia. I then felt the bed dip and soft breathes in my ear which meant it was definitely Portia in bed. I turned my body towards her since I was sleeping on my stomach.

“I am still mad at you.” She began. “But I can’t sleep peacefully without you.” She said as she laid her head on my chest and intertwined our fingers together.

“I am really sorry about dinner. I honestly thought it was tonight. I am sorry about the dogs too I should have at least called and made sure it was okay with you.” I said.

“You should have definitely called first.” She said and I began to worry she was getting mad again and was ready to leave.

“I can take them back if you want me to.”

“It’s fine. The girls already named them and we already got them immunized. You are definitely going to be cleaning up when they mess up something that’s not up for discussion.”

“So am I out of the dog house?”

“If you can not miss any more dinners and forgive me for giving you the cold shoulder then I think that can be arranged.” She said smiling.

“Done and done.” I said sealing both deals with a kiss.
