Lips of an angel
Lips of an angel
“… more so to your fiancée.”
Ellen's words play over and over in my mind. I should be focusing on her and our marriage in about a month.
“You okay?” My fiancée's voice pulls me away from my thoughts.
“Yeah. I was just thinking about some stuff. Why are you awake?”
“You sure?”
My phone rings. Its 3am and it rings. Every day for the past month it rung at 3am. I knew who it was on the other line and I already know what the conversation will be about.
“Hi.”
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
“Hey.”
“You’ll be coming right?”
“I’ll be there.”
“You sure? I just want to know if you will back out.”
“I won’t. I’ll be there.”
“Where is she?”
“Its three am portia she is asleep.”
“Oh right. Does she know?”
“No. I don’t think so at least.
A moment of silence falls between us like it has for the past month. Each of us having a question that we need to ask but can’t.

“Why do you keep calling?” I ask the alternative question I have in mind.
“Why do you keep answering El?”
“Cause I miss you.”
“I miss you too.”
“We should stop. It’s not fair to my girlfriend and more so to your fiancée.”
“But we can’t.”
“Good night Portia.”
“Good night Ellen.”
I look at my phone for a while running my thumb over Portia’s name. Do you want to delete this contact? I look at her name one last time before pressing yes and heading back to bed and sliding next to my girlfriend.

“Well someone wasn’t in bed. I had to make sure you were alright.”
“I am fine. You should go back to sleep.”
“I think we should cancel the wedding.” She says
“What? Why? I love you. I want to get married.”
“And I love you too. I know you want to get married but not to me.”
“What are you talking about?” I ask her even though I feel like I know the answer already.”
“You want me but you need Ellen. I have heard your conversations a few times I thought I would give you time till you chose to tell me but I can’t go on pretending.”
“I am sorry.”
“It’s okay. I am not all that upset about it. I knew what I was getting into when I saw you two together.” She says as she grabs a hold of my hand.
“You should call her back and tell her your decision. I’ll sleep in the guest bedroom then pack up tomorrow.” She says as she grabs a hold of my hands.
“You sure?”
“Yeah. Go ahead. I’ll be fine.”
A couple of months later
I call. The number I have memorized by heart, imprinted on my mind, speed dial number one on my phone, and my emergency contact. It was three a.m. again but I still call.

“Am here.” She says standing at the door and I leap out of our bed and into her arms.
